How the Village Works

The Village of Old Bennington is a part of the Town of Bennington. Village residents vote in elections and pay taxes in both the Village and the Town. The Village is primarily responsible for maintaining its roads and sidewalks as well as enforcing its own bylaws, ordinances, and planning and zoning regulations. The Town is responsible for most other matters within the Village. Village residents do get a credit on their Town tax bill roughly equivalent to the amount they pay in Village taxes to maintain our roads and sidewalks.

Our Village government consists of the Board of Trustees, Officers, the Planning Commission, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, and a Board of Abatement.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for ensuring compliance with our Village Bylaws and Ordinances, which can be found here. They meet regularly on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 pm at the Old First Church Barn at 1 Monument Circle. The Agendas and Minutes as well as instructions on attending the meetings on Zoom can be found here.

The Planning Commission is responsible for overseeing the Village Plan and ensuring compliance with the Zoning Bylaws. They meet regularly on the second Monday of the month at 7 pm at the Old First Church Barn. The Agendas and Minutes as well as instructions on attending their meetings on Zoom can be found here.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment meets as necessary to consider conditional use applications, variances, and waivers relating to the Zoning Bylaws.

The Board of Tax Abatement meets as necessary to consider requests to reduce or forgive taxes for a limited number of reasons specified by State law.

The Village officers include the Clerk, the Treasurer and Tax Collector, the Auditor, the Moderator, and the Administrative Officer. Their responsibilities are described in the Village Bylaws that can be found here.
