Property taxes

The Village tax rate is based on the budgeted property tax revenue divided by the aggregate assessed value of taxable property in the Village. The assessed value of properties in the Village is determined by the Town of Bennington assessors. This year voters approved the Road Tax Rate of $0.5331 (per hundred dollar valuation) to match the Town’s Road Tax rate for its FY 2026, the latest rate available, and to hold the General Tax Rate at $0.0400 (per hundred dollar valuation), which increased the Overall Tax Rate by 6.9% to $0.5731 (per hundred dollar valuation).

The chart at the right shows the historical tax rates from FY 2023 through FY 2026 as well as the budget rate for FY 2027.

Residents with questions about the assessed value of their property can contact the Town tax assessor here.

Tax Abatements

Residents  may be able to receive an abatement of their taxes under 24 VSA §1535 that you can find here. If you would like to schedule a meeting concerning an abatement, please send a request to the Village Clerk, Mary Walsh, at mary.williams.walsh@gmail.com.
